Slavonija, the region I live in, is known for being extremely flat and mostly uninteresting if you’re looking for twisty and winding roads. However, there’s a notable exception and a true gem not that far away from regional centres. You see, the region between several notable Slavonian cities (Našice, Orahovica, Velika, Požega, Lipik, Pakrac, Daruvar, Pleternica and Nova Gradiška) is home to the biggest mountain range in Eastern Croatia.
The region has four notable mountains: Krndija, Papuk, Bilogora, and Psunj. All of these are very close together and make for an excellent low-altitude mountainous region. The highest peak of Slavonija is still under 1,000m tall, but for us living here, that’s a majestic mountain.
While most roads around here are great, today we’re focusing on the one connecting Našice with the regional capital, Požega. This road takes us through the hillsides of Krndija and provides some exceptional corners and sights, as well as one of the best Slavonia scenic drives.
This road is interesting because it’s the perfect day trip from both Osijek, Đakovo or Slavonski Brod since it’s very close to the three cities. Starting in Našice, the road gets interesting after Gradac Našički and includes more than a dozen fun corners before Bektež. There, it changes to a long sweeping road overlooking the plains before transitioning again to a twisty and fun segment in Cerovac.
Coming into Požega, you’ll be greeted by one of the prettiest small cities in Croatia, which sits surrounded by its mountain protectors. From there, whichever way you go, you’ll encounter twisty roads and interesting stops!
Fun facts
The route is a great intro to the Požega region, known for its hills and mountains, as well as great cultural relevance. I’d strongly advise you to stop and enjoy the sights of one of the UNESCO Geoparks.
Recommended stops
Omanovac, Domovinski Križ and Sokolovac are all interesting viewpoints near the route, providing great views across the region.
